As electricity demand surges, driven largely by AI and crypto data centers, a clean energy transition is more urgent than ever. Many point to nuclear energy as a solution, but behind the nuclear hype are unresolved issues of public health, safety, costs, and community impacts.
MEIC, Honor the Earth, Billings Climate Coalition, and Northern Plains Resource Council hosted this panel discussion about the risks and realities of nuclear energy, and how it’s delaying actual solutions to the climate crisis and the growing power demand for data centers.
Panelists discussed the growing push for new experimental nuclear technologies, recent federal deregulation, and the social, environmental, and justice impacts that too often get left out of the conversation.
Panelists:
- Shannon James, Campaigns and Advocacy Director at MEIC
- Clint McRae, fourth generation rancher, south of Colstrip
- Nick Fitzmaurice, Energy Transition Engineer at MEIC
- Krystal Two Bulls, Executive Director at Honor the Earth
