Position Summary:
The Montana Environmental Information Center (MEIC) is a non-partisan, non-profit environmental advocate dedicated to ensuring clean air, clean water and a healthy climate for Montana’s present and future generations. The Development Officer is responsible for the organization’s fundraising activities and developing and implementing the adopted long-term vision and annual fundraising plans to fund MEIC’s operations. This includes: developing and implementing strategies to gain, retain, and increase financial support from individual donors and foundations; ensuring adequate member outreach and engagement; ensuring cultivation of relationships with donors and foundation representatives; and ensuring compliance with foundation reporting in an accurate and timely manner.

Type: Full time, permanent, exempt position. Preferred start date is February 1, 2025. There is a 1-year probationary period. 

Location: Helena, Montana.

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer.

Travel: Some overnight travel required. 

Compensation: $65,000-$70,000 annually, depending on experience. MEIC offers a competitive benefits package that includes: seasonal four-day work week, paid vacation and holiday leave, sick and family leave, parental leave, and health insurance. Additionally, retirement account contributions begin after one year of employment, and sabbatical leave is available after seven years of employment.

Responsibilities: 

  • Fundraising Appeals and Grant Management
    • Draft MEIC’s fundraising appeals and other fundraising materials. Work with communications staff to deliver the final product. 
    • Manage donation acknowledgement processes.
    • Lead effort to draft and submit grant proposals and reports in a complete and timely manner. 
    • Track deadlines and circulate drafts and final documents to staff.
  • Prospecting and Membership Development
    • Identify and cultivate prospective members and major donors.
    • Manage a portfolio of relationships with donors and foundation contacts.
    • Perform foundation research to identify new funding opportunities.
  • Other Fundraising Tasks
    • Assist with maintaining MEIC’s donor database.
    • Assist with print and send monthly membership renewal requests.
    • Perform other tasks as needed.
  • Office Administration and Bookkeeping
    • Assist with processing mail.
    • Assist with the input and manage organization of income (checks and credit card transactions) into Quickbooks and Little Green Light (CRM)

Essential Qualifications:

  • A commitment to protect Montana’s natural environment.
  • Two or more years of related fundraising experience, grant management experience and/or major donor experience. Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required depending on experience. 
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage tasks and deadlines.
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information.
  • The ability to work well with a fast-paced collaborative team and little supervision.
  • Mastery of basic computer skills, including familiarity with Google Workspace applications, Microsoft Office, Zoom, and donor database systems. 
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and justice and an understanding of how these values intersect with environmental issues.

Knowledge, Competencies, and Skills:

  • Awareness of Montana’s political landscape, especially as it pertains to environmental issues and policies.
  • A willingness to take the initiative on tasks and projects. 
  • The ability to work well with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Social and emotional intelligence to enable effective work as a team member and relationship builder for the organization. 
  • Experience with some or all of the following programs and platforms would be a huge plus: macOS, Slack, QuickBooks, and Little Green Light.
