There is a way to help Colstrip and produce clean, safe, economical electricity. That is to replace the boilers at Colstrip 1&2 with an advanced Small Modular Reactor (SMR). The best SMR for our country is GE-Hitachi’s PRISM reactor because it can use spent nuclear fuel as a power source, and destroy 95% of it in the process. In fact, the company has proposed a plan to do just that, but Governor Bullock and MEIC’s president,Jim Jensen, have shown no interest.
Canada, in Ontario, plans to use fleets of SMRs to reduce their carbon footprint by 37% in 20 years and 80% by 2050. If Ontario can do it, why can’t Montana?
