Job Title:  Climate and Campaigns Organizer

Location: Helena, Montana. Some possible flexibility to work remotely, particularly from Missoula, if a candidate with excellent qualifications can travel to Helena on a regular basis. 30-40% travel time.

Compensation: MEIC offers compensation commensurate with skills and experience and a competitive benefits package that includes: sabbatical leave, paid vacation and holidays, family leave, sick leave, health insurance, and retirement account contributions after two years of employment. Starting salary for this position will be in the $48,000-$52,000 range. 

Reports to: Executive Director (ED) and works closely with the Policy and Legislative Director (PLD) and Communications and Engagement Director (CED).

Scope: The Climate and Campaigns Organizer is responsible for working with staff to design and implement grassroots advocacy campaigns that advance MEIC’s mission of ensuring a clean and healthful environment for all Montanans. This is a full-time, exempt position with a year-long trial period, and high likelihood that the position would become permanent after successful job performance during the first year. 

Job Activities:

  • Coordinate with MEIC’s staff team to grow and engage MEIC’s active network of donors, volunteers, partners, and supporters across Montana.
  • Work with the PLD, ED, and program staff to create and implement grassroots community organizing efforts to environmental issues in Montana.
  • Work collaboratively with staff to develop more robust community organizing efforts in service of meeting MEIC’s organizational goals.
  • Work with other staff to plan and execute member engagement, education, recruitment, and appreciation events across the state.
  • During legislative sessions, work as a member of MEIC’s lobbying team to advocate for progressive energy and environmental policies at the Montana Legislature. Help defend Montanans’ constitutional right to a clean and healthful environment. Help ensure that a diversity of stories, voices, and visions are brought to the table in service of creating successful campaigns.
  • Cultivate transformational partnerships with individuals and organizations in Montana in coordination with other key MEIC staff.
  • Participate in MEIC’s ongoing work to realize our goals toward greater diversity, equity, inclusion and justice.
  • In coordination with the ED and Communications and Engagement Director, prepare reports and materials for donors and board meetings and assist in raising funds for campaigns. Assist ED with foundation funding opportunity research and support submission of grant proposals and reports.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as needed.

Preferred Knowledge, Competencies, & Skills:

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • 1-3 years of issue or fundraising campaign experience, particularly with organizing teams and grassroots bases, issue advocacy programs, and/or lobbying.
  • Familiarity with climate change and clean energy policy, water issues, and experience in the environmental movement.
  • Awareness of Montana’s statewide political and cultural landscapes and how social and political issues intersect with pollution and other environmental harms.
  • Experience in successfully working across lines of race, ethnicity, language, class, gender, and other identities and experiences.
  • Social and emotional intelligence and the ability to work effectively as a member of a highly collaborative team.
  • Cultural Competence: Awareness of one’s own cultural identity, views about difference, and the ability to learn and build on varying cultural and community norms. A commitment to gaining understanding of racial justice and the urgency of confronting institutional racism and inequity within our political system. Commitment to equity and inclusion as organizational practice and culture.
  • Drivers license or ability/willingness to obtain one.
  • Experience with some or all of the following programs and platforms is a huge plus: macOS, donor or customer management systems (i.e. Salesforce, Little Green Light), Mailchimp, WordPress, Canva, Google Analytics, podcasting and/or video editing software, and social media platforms.
