Now, more than ever, we need you to take action for our water, our climate, and our tribal communities. Say NO to the Keystone XL pipeline!
The Keystone XL pipeline has been repeatedly rejected because it’s terrible for Montana and our climate, our water, and our economy. But this pipeline is akin to whack-a-mole, and it’s rearing its ugly head again.
In the past, the federal government has managed most of the permitting for this dangerous Canadian-owned project. But now Montana gets to have a say – because the pipeline’s backer, TC Energy, is attempting to get a permit from the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).
DEQ is currently taking comments on TC Energy’s application for a 401 permit. If approved, the permit would allow the pipeline to cross 201 Montana waterways, as well as wetlands. Denying the permit would protect Montana waterways and Tribal water systems from inevitable spills of a toxic substance that sinks to the bottom of waterways and is impossible to clean up.
Keystone XL is an enormous risk to our water and climate. It will transport millions of gallons of tar sands bitumen, which is carbon-intensive to extract, and has already caused environmental devastation in Canada. Join thousands of your fellow Montanans and let the DEQ know that KXL risks long-term damage to the hundreds of waterways and wetlands along its route.
You can also testify at the virtual public hearing on the permit hosted by DEQ on November 16th from 4-8 PM. To testify, make sure to pre-register for the event.
