Help Helena’s new schools become solar ready

Contact the Helena School Board

Dear Board Members,

As a Helena area resident, I encourage the board ensure new schools in our community are designed to allow the installation of rooftop solar in the future. Rooftop solar provides significant benefits to the students and budget of Helena Public Schools and including it as a ready-to-go option in building designs makes it easier and cheaper to install in the future.

Rooftop solar helps schools save money on utility bills, allowing funds that that were spent on cooling and lighting to go toward educational programs and staff. Even better, the cost of installing solar has dropped dramatically over the last 10 years and continues to drop, making the upfront costs cheaper than ever and allowing schools to save money faster. This could be a great benefit to the Helena school district budget down the road. Additionally, there are federal and state grant opportunities that help schools install solar, further bringing down installation costs. All of this adds up to more savings for education.

Rooftop solar would also provide students with cutting-edge learning opportunities. Solar panels and their support devices such as inverters and trackers, as well as the software used to manage them, represent the latest advancements in material science and computer engineering. With an on-site solar installation, students could receive in-depth exposure to these advanced fields and better position them for success in science, technology, engineering, and math.

Please ensure that Helena's new schools are designed to be ready to install rooftop solar. A little upfront planning is all it takes to reduce costs and barriers to "going solar" in the future.

Thank you,
