SB 173, by Sen. Terry Gauthier (R-Helena), would create a $25 fine and allow for the towing of a non-electric vehicle when it parks in a parking space that is designed to charge electric vehicles.
When a business owner or other entity invests in creating an electric vehicle charging station parking space on their property the cost can be $25,000 or more. This substantial investment is usually designed to attract more customers to the establishment. This bill creates a nudge to protect that investment from being blocked while also facilitating the adoption of zero and low emission vehicles.
Passed out of the Senate Highways and Transportation committee on a 6-4 vote. Re-referred to Senate Highways and Transportation Committee from the Senate Floor for amendments. Passed that committee again on a 6-5 vote. Passed the Senate floor 26-23. Failed the House Judiciary Committee on an 8-11 vote. The bill was tabled and is likely dead.
