SB 120, by Sen. Sue Malek (D-Missoula), mandates that a retail food establishment may not provide patrons with a single-use plastic straw unless requested. Estimates suggest Americans use 500 million drinking straws every day, contributing to well over 8 million metric tons of plastic that end up in the ocean each year.

Senator Malek’s bill seeks to put the ball in the consumer’s court so that it becomes our own prerogative to decide whether or not to be a part of a needless waste stream.

SB 125 was heard on Fri., Jan. 25th at 8:30 AM in the Senate Business, Labor, and Economic Affairs Committee in Rm. 422, and the committee has not yet voted.
