This open-pit gold mine located a few miles south of Helena is seeking to expand its operations. This mine was operated by the now-bankrupt Pegasus Gold Corp.and was acquired by Apollo Gold of Denver from the bankruptcy court. DEQ is preparing an environmental impact statement on the proposed expansion.

(March 2009)  The owners of Montana Tunnels have announced the mothballing of the mine due to the inability to finance the mine’s announced expansion (read story).
