McDonald Gold Project (Blackfoot River)

Saving the Blackfoot River

Overview

The Blackfoot River, made famous by Norman Maclean's book "A River Runs Through It" and Robert Redford's movie of the same name, is in jeopardy. A massive open-pit, cyanide leach gold mine has been proposed less than 800 feet from the river' headwaters. If permitted, it will be one of the ten largest gold mines in the world.

MEIC has been fighting this mine proposal for years. So far, we've been very successful. In 1998, MEIC introduced a citizen's initiative to prohibit open pit, cyanide leach mining in Montana. The initiative passed 52% to 48%. Canyon Resources, the mining company behind the proposal, has filed a lawsuit challenging the initiative in court.
