Within the next few months, we expect Secretary of State John Kerry to issue a recommendation to the President on whether to approve the dangerous Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. A major portion of this pipeline will cross over eastern Montana, placing Montana communities, farms and ranches, and our cherished rivers at risk. Too much is at stake. We need you to contact Secretary John Kerry today, and to tell him the pipeline should be rejected by the President.

Climate scientist James Hansen has said that if Canada is able to develop its tar sands oil reserves, it will be “game over” for our climate. What’s more, the pipeline route will cross the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers. Do we want another Yellowstone river oil disaster? Even worse, we’ve learned that this type of oil sinks, making cleanup of a spill extremely difficult.

We need longtime climate change champion John Kerry to set the record straight if we hope to stop this dirty and dangerous pipeline. But we have very little time to convince Secretary Kerry to make the right decision for our lands and our climate. Will you speak out now?

During his State of the Union address last week, President Obama reiterated his commitment to fighting climate change, saying, “when our children’s children look us in the eye and ask if we did all we could to leave them a safer, more stable world, with new sources of energy, I want us to be able to say yes, we did.”

President Obama has said in the past that he will not approve the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline if it is deemed to significantly increase carbon pollution. We know that this pipeline would dramatically increase carbon pollution and have a devastating impact on our climate. We also know that the risk of tar sands spills would put Montana lands and water in danger.

If we do not act, the State Department could recommend approval of the pipeline. But John Kerry can help.

Help us now by sending this message, before it’s too late. Tell Secretary Kerry that we cannot afford to let the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline become a reality – Not for America and not for Montana.
